A new direction for British Waterways, whose 2,000 miles of canals and waterways are used by ten million visitors a year, was signalled today by Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott and Minister for the Waterways Alan Meale.

Mr Prescott announced a package of measures including GBP24 million of extra investment, phasing out debt, opportunities to develop partnership schemes with the private and public sectors and a membership scheme.
