Breast reconstruction performed immediately following mastectomy is significantly less expensive than if done separately. Research showed that the economic advantage of immediate reconstruction averaged $11,042 per patient. In delayed reconstruction, costs were 62% higher. Total costs of resources were determined by combining all the expenses of the mastectomy and the breast reconstruction process through completion of the nipple reconstruction, as measured by hours of time in the operating room, days of stay in the hospital, and other care.
