The Dakota, Minnesota & Eastern's proposal to build a new line into the Powder River coal fields has won the preliminary approval of the Surface Transportation Board. STB said it found that the proposal "satisfies statutory standards required for new rail line construction by the ICC Termination Act."
In addition to 262 miles of new track, DM&E says it will rebuild nearly 60 miles of existing main line through central South Dakota and southern Minnesota and upgrade 240 additional miles not on the coal route.
