The cars bearing Walter P.'s name celebrate their 75th birthday.
It was 75 years ago that Walter Percy Chrysler became the last American to start a successful, enduring car company. In five short years, Chrysler built himself a company whose range of makes and models covered the market from top to bottom. Walter P. was Buick's works manager from 1912 to 1919 when the Willys-Overland company offered him $ 1 million to save the ailing company. And while he was saving Willys, he got a call from Maxwell-Chalmers, also needing saving. Chrysler again asked for--and got--$1 million.
