With broad backing from conservative religious groups, members of Congress introduced legislation May 20 to protect Christians and other religious minorities from persecution in foreign nations.
The legislation, titled the "Freedom From Religious Persecution Act," would also create a senior White House position that would be responsible for monitoring international religious persecution and would help expedite proceedings for those immigrants claiming asylum from religious persecution.
The bill, sponsored in the Senate by Sen. Arlen Specter (R-Pa.) and in the House by Rep. Frank Wolf (R-Va.), would punish nations with sanctions including a ban on all ...
