WARSAW, 1942: Desperate to tell the Allies what was happening inside Nazi-occupied Poland, the government-in-exile sent Jan Karski, 28, a courier for the underground Resistance, to London and to Washington. Karski was told to provide the Western powers with an assessment of the German military machine and to alert the world to the destruction of the Jews. He did so. But few believed him.
