Infrared radiation, a component of sunlight, may protect cells from UV-induced damage, according to a study published in the October 1998 issue of the Journal of Investigative Dermatology. The research, partly financed by C.E.R.I.E.S and led by Dr. Louis Dubertret, professor and chairman, department of dermatology, Saint-Louis Hospital, Paris, will continue to examine the mechanism underlying the protective effects of infrared light. This offers hope, to both the fields of dermatology and cosmetic research, for new ways to protect human skin from the consequences of UV damage, such as photoaging and skin cancer.
