There have been many stories recently about organized labor s use of the Internet to promote both new organizing and strikes. For example, the success of Justice for Janitors, a campaign by the Service Employees International Union to organize janitorial workers in Silicon Valley, relied heavily on Internet communication. Other cases include the Korean Confederation of Trade Unions' use of the World Wide Web to gain support from unionists in other countries and the International Federation of Chemical, Energy, Mine and General Workers' successful use of the Internet to coordinate their campaign against Firestone (Newman 1996; Parikh and Murphy 1997).
