French fries have become increasingly popular in Saudi Arabia. They're even beginning to be produced there, but most of the volume comes from imports -- with Egypt the leading source, having overtaken the Netherlands in 1996.
Restaurants, primarily fast food outlets, account for about 60% of french fry consumption, according to research by the US Foreign Agricultural Service attache's office in Riyadh, with supermarkets and catering firms representing about 20% each.
