Kyrgyz Republic President Askar Akaev

President Askar Akaev was elected president of the Kyrgyz Soviet Socialist Republic on October 27, 1990. Dr. Akaev graduated with honors from the Leningrad Precision Mechanics and Optics Institute in 1967 and pursued his studies to become a doctor of science. Dr. Akaev began his career in 1961 as a mechanic worker, continued as a senior laboratory researcher, engineer, senior lecturer and professor, and proceeded to become chairman in Frunze Polytechnical Institute, which is now known as Bishkek Technical University.
