A COMMON SURFACTANT, sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), is said to be able to inactivate a number of viruses that cause sexually transmitted diseases, including human papillomaviruses (HPVs), according to a study published in the February issue of Antimicrobial Agents and Chemotherapy. Baring further study, SDS may be a candidate for formulation into vaginal preparations that help prevent the spread of genital warts that lead to cervical cancer.
The study by Mary K. Howett of the M.S. Hershey Medical Center of the Pennsylvania State University and others was funded by the National Institute of Allergies and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) as part of a program to encourage ...
