NEW YORK -- With 55% of Americans now officially classified as overweight, according to the latest guidelines issued by the National Institutes of Health, it is no surprise that sales of weight loss and diet control products are at record levels.
Mass market sales of diet pills were up 4.9% last year. while meal replacement volume registered a hearty 28.5% gain. Chain drug stores remain the leading trade class in the diet pill segment, owning 44% of the market, but the channel lags behind both food/drug combination stores (32%) and discounters (30%) in sales of meal replacements, capturing only 20% of that $957 million business.
