The basis for both books under review are accounts by an Appalachian healer called A.L. Tommi Bass from Cherokee County (northeast Alabama, USA). He was, until his death in 1996, a regionally well-known healer and was interviewed by the two authors during several periods of fieldwork that covered a total of nearly nine years. It is based on interviews with this healer, his patients, neighbours, but also people in the area who had never sought his advice.
