Mar. 15 -- It is one measure of an astonishing decade of deal making by Fleet Financial Group: Of the 10 biggest banks in New England in 1987, Fleet will own eight of them once it acquires BankBoston Corp.
BankBoston is the biggest prize of them all for Fleet, which has long had its eye on its cross-town rival. The $16 billion proposed deal with BankBoston, announced yesterday, caps a string of acquisitions in which Fleet has grown from a Rhode Island-chartered bank to a powerful competitor on the national -- and now international -- stage.
