Street catering is one of Gaborone's fastest growing service industries and one that is mutually rewarding to Batswana women and to the city, capital of Botswana, located in southern Africa. But city officials believe that the industry is growing too fast, its number is too large, and its operations, which they view as ordinary cart-type vending, should be regulated, licensed and relegated to a designated market site. Women street caterers, on the other hand, view themselves not as petty vendors but as restauranteurs who use public space to provide an important function.
