The efficiency of transfer of highly potent Ganciclovir (GCV) nucleotides may be responsible for the efficacy of bystander-mediated killing in herpes simplex virus (HSV) thymidine kinase (TK)/GCV suicide gene therapy.

In order to optimize HSV-TK/GCV gene therapy, more detailed studies on how the bystander effect works are needed. It is also important that the cells being studied are developed from the same parental cell line.
