The UCLA Archive of Folk Medicine is one of the largest such archives in the world.
It contains about 210,000 folk remedies, including scores of African-American treatments dating back as far as 200 years. Data was obtained from field reports, scientific journals, popular magazines, newspapers, diaries and travel accounts.
Here are some remedies once used. They are for information only; some are potentially hazardous and should not be tried.
ANKLE SPRAINS: Mix clay, vinegar and chewing tobacco, wrap in towel and tie around ankle.
ASTHMA: Drink goat's milk.
BLADDER TROUBLE: Drink flaxseed and cream of tartar mixed in boiling ...
