American wheat breeders, producers and dealers have responded very well to domestic needs but have let the lion's share of the world export market go adrift, according to a senior analyst for the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Foreign Agricultural Service (FAS).

In a nutshell, the American wheat sector produces a great variety of wheat types suitable for domestic uses but then invites foreign buyers to shop among the leftovers rather than produce wheat desired by those buyers, said Lee Schatz, FAS deputy director of analysis.
