One of the true rites of spring is upon us, the baseball exhibition season in Florida and Arizona. Too bad exhibition-style play is going to last right through autumn for a majority of baseball teams this year -- and for years to come.
Oh, sure, the real season begins next month, but in reality, the season already has ended for a majority of Major League Baseball teams that haven't a ghost of a chance of getting into the playoffs or World Series come October.
The gulf between the haves and have nots has never been wider in baseball after a winter that saw inflationary -- and ridiculous -- salaries paid out to free agents by the big-market teams.
