The war in Europe between 1914 and 1918 has generated relatively few case studies from business historians writing in the English language. This is rather surprising since the unexpected length and cost of the conflict, unparalleled state intervention, massive disruption to normal trade and financial arrangements all had implications for manufacturers and merchants in both belligerent and neutral countries.
