Short- and long-range planning on Iraq is based on the premise that Saddam Hussein will remain in power for the foreseeable future. Though a reasonable working assumption, some thought should be given to the possibility, however remote, that Saddam could suddenly disappear from the Iraqi scene, and to what the consequences of that might be. This article examines some post-Saddam scenarios and reflects on their implications for Iraq and the international community. The following exercise is necessarily speculative, dealing as it does with an admittedly low-probability event: the removal of Saddam Hussein from power.
