Agriculture: Biotechnology has led to increased crop yields and reductions in pesticide use, according to a study performed by the National Center for Food & Agricultural Policy (NCFAP) and sponsored by the Biotechnology Industry Organization. More than 50 million acres in North America were planted with genetically modified corn, cotton, and soybeans in 1998, says a senior research associate for NCFAP. A genetic modification to corn to produce an insect-killing toxin has increased yields by 13 bushels per acre. A genetic modification to cotton allows growers to spray with insecticide only once per season, as opposed to six or seven times for nonmodified plants. ...
