The Navy has awarded the contract to publish its authorized local newspaper, the Navy Compass, to the El Cajon-based Daily Californian. The Californian will be the third publisher in the paper's five-year history.
The contract between the Navy and the Californian is for two years, with annual options to extend up to six years, said Mary Markovinovic, acting deputy director of the Navy's local public affairs department.
According to the contract, the Californian will sell advertising, handle and finance the Compass' weekly production and printing and take in any sales profit, Markovinovic said.
