Why cast from a kayak? Why not?
THE SUN HAS JUST BROKEN the horizon, flooding the bay with red-tinted light. The birds are on the move, terns and gulls, pelicans and ducks, moving low across the sky, occasionally breaking formation, wheeling and diving, plunging into the still water to snatch baitfish. Mullet jump in their goofy, cartoonlike way, launching themselves from the water and sailing horizontally through the air before belly flopping inelegantly; one flies directly over the bow of my kayak like a trained porpoise. As we glide silently up on an exposed sand spit, a bald eagle lifts off no more than 20 yards away, the breadth of his wingspan astonishing ...
