John Garver's book analyzes the background to and significance of the Taiwan Strait crisis of 1996. To summarize, this came about when China, ostensibly seeking to halt what its leadership considered "splittist" tendencies in Taiwan (over which China claims sovereignty), conducted a series of military exercises in waters off the island's coast. As the exercises reached their climax in the weeks immediately preceding Taiwan's presidential elections in March 1996, the United States responded by dispatching carrier battle groups to the area. ...
