Do calcium supplements help relieve the symptoms of premenstrual syndrome? That's the question researchers at the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) asked in a recent issue of the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology. The researchers studied more than 1,000 women with PMS, half of whom took 1,200 milligrams of calcium a day for three months, making this one of the largest studies ever conducted on PMS.
The researchers found that the women who took the calcium supplements (consisting of four chewable calcium carbonate tablets) reduced their overall PMS symptoms by more than 50 percent. Women who took calcium in the study reduced their ...
