Blood banks may need to develop new donor management strategies to address Trypanosoma cruzi in the blood supply, American Red Cross researchers indicated.
Several recent studies have documented the seroprevalence of T. cruzi, the etiologic agent of Chagas' disease, in blood donors at high risk for infection. However, little information is available about donors with lower levels of risk for this parasitic infection.
David A. Leiby, American Red Cross, Rockville, Maryland, and colleagues designed a study to measure the seroprevalence of T. cruzi in a donor population with low to moderate risk for infection.
