Apr. 11 -- Damage from mountaintop removal mining has earned the Coal River in Southern West Virginia a place on an annual list of the nation's most endangered rivers.
The conservation group American Rivers cited more than 200 miles of Coal River tributaries buried under mountaintop removal valley fills, according to the report, America's Most Endangered Rivers of 1999, to be released Monday.
"The level of environmental degradation in West Virginia from mountaintop removal coal mining is appalling," said Rebecca Wodder, president of American Rivers.
