The Hollywood sign is probably the most enduring symbol of the movie industry. A more appropriate symbol would be a giant pointing finger.
This town loves to point the finger. It doesn't matter where it's pointed, as long as it's pointed at someone else.
At no time is this finger-pointing more prevalent than on the Monday after the disappointing opening weekend of a new film. The boardrooms are filled with people pointing fingers. There are a lot of shaking heads, too, but that's another column.
There is no finger-pointing after a lousy movie opens poorly, because most lousy movies make $100 million. It is only when a good movie, or at least a ...
