The Principal's New Clothes by Stephanie Calmenson (1989) provides a delightful, whimsical context for investigations in measurement. This story is a modern-day adaptation of Hans Christian Andersen's The Emperor's New Clothes. Mr. Bundy, the principal of P.S. 88, is a very classy dresser. One day, Moe and Ivy come to town, offering to make Mr. Bundy a new suit from magic cloth. Children find the hilarious outcome very entertaining.
When I shared the book with my fourth-grade students, Suzanne suggested that we measure our principal and make a suit of clothes for him. Joey added that we should also measure the assistant principal and make some clothes for her.
