Critics routinely acknowledge that all films are political, but readily agree that some films are more political than others. When the filmmakers are Palestinian and Israeli documentarians concerned about a lasting peace in the region, politics, in fact, is the central concern. Valuable filmmaking skills reside less in dazzling or innovative techniques than in achieving access and trust among people and in places where secrecy and distrust are the rule. The most difficult conceptual challenge is to find formats in which the toughest issues can be addressed with candor, and thoughtful alternatives, rather than denial and hypocritical rhetoric, can be posited.
