When Shannon Reeves, president of the Oakland chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, or NAACP, arrived home from work March 5 and opened his mail, he got a nasty surprise -- a death threat. Along with the letter containing racist epithets was a small plastic bag that contained a bullet.
