This book's nine substantive chapters tell in a straightforward, chronological order an aspect of South Carolina's experiences during Reconstruction from the end of the Civil War to Redemption, the restoration of power to white South Carolinians on 11 April 1877, when Wade Hampton became the uncontested governor.
