This volume, the first full monograph to appear on the subject in over 20 years, offers a curious mixture of historical writing. On the one hand, Geoffrey Wawro presents excellent campaign history, particularly of the little-covered events in the Italian theater of operations. On the other, the work suffers greatly from both an over-exaggerated claim of its methodological extent and from the author's unduly harsh criticisms of the Austrian side, which form the centerpiece of this volume.
