It is fitting that one of the most widely read and frequently published Jesuit books of spirituality should appear in a modern edition. There were 18 editions published from its first appearance in 1582 down to 1700--not counting the bowdlerized Protestant editions and the many translations into other languages. In Colonial America it was one of the pious books ordered by the Maryland Catholics, and there were at least two more American editions in the 19th century.
