Grass, said the great American poet Walt Whitman, is the flag of our disposition. So when I saw humps of green emerge in our yard after this year's late snows, I was roused from a pale winter funk into a frenzy of green hope. With my spring-fever mania to work in the yard and a few extra greenbacks burning in my wallet, I thought it would be a snap to turn our half-acre of crabgrass and dandelions into bona fide sward. Was my disposition in for a shock!
The three lawn services I called bid from $550 to almost $1,200 to treat my lawn. Going organic would cost even more, and the lawn would take years instead of months to improve. How could prices vary so much? ...
