Apr. 27 -- When Jack Stephens' miniature pinscher was attacked by a coyote the week before Christmas, his daughter took the dog to the veterinarian. The doctor told her that the pinscher, Thelma, would need expensive surgery and might not live.

The veterinarian suggested she consider putting the animal to sleep. But Stephens' daughter didn't hesitate to authorize about $3,000 in procedures that the dog needed.
