Although I am not a Jamesian, I could not resist Studies in the Novel's invitation to review this marvelous collection of mostly new essays on the Master's New York Edition (hereafter Edition) that David McWhirter has assembled. Because James labored so carefully and at such length on selecting, revising, and ordering the Edition's contents; on writing its series of extraordinary prefaces; on overseeing the production of Alvin Langdon Coburn's photographs for the frontispieces to its individual volumes; on designing its physical format; and on marketing the finished product; his great expectations for its critical and financial success were all the more mightily dashed by ...
