Apr. 30 -- Hope dimmed for 1,000 longshoremen jobs yesterday as talks broke down in the standoff between the Pataki and Whitman administrations over the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey.
Louis Eisenberg, the PA's chairman, canceled the monthly board meeting after New York and New Jersey officials couldn't resolve a proposed contract with Sea-Land Service and Maersk Line for use of the Elizabeth, N.J., terminal.
