MONTREAL -- A few minutes before opening on a recent Tuesday morning, a crowd of about 50 shoppers had already gathered outside the new Simons department store on downtown St. Catherine Street.
The same scene wasn't happening outside Eaton's or The Bay two blocks away. But the new Simons store had been open less than a month and there was bound to be the curiosity factor. "The reception has been great, much stronger than I expected," said Peter Simons, 34, whose great-great grandfather opened the first Simons store in Quebec City in 1840, 27 years before Canada was officially a country. "We doubled our first month's forecast."
