TROY, Mich.-Kmart Corp. announced on April 11 that it has revamped some 131 stores in its new Big Kmart format, bringing the company's Big Kmart total to 1,376, or about 60 percent of the chain, since the roll- out began in 1996.

The redesign of these stores cost the nation's second largest discounter $79 million, according to the company. The Big Kmart format has wider aisles, brighter lighting and a merchandise strategy altered from that of traditional Kmart stores.
