INTRODUCTION

Electrorheolgical (ER) fluids are suspensions of polarizable particles in a nonconducting oil. They exhibit a dramatic change in the rheological and electrical properties such as viscosity, yield stress, viscoelasticity, and dielectric constant by imposing an electric field. This change is due to the migration of particles and formation of a chainlike or columnar structure oriented along the electric field direction over the gap between the electrodes (1-3). The structure formation is known to be induced by the mismatch of the dielectric constant between the suspended particle and nonconducting oil (4).
