Lawmakers' intentions were praised, but satellite TV industry officials said that last Tuesday's House passage of a compromise bill to revamp the Satellite Home Viewer Act (SHVA) leaves a number of dicey issues unsettled and the prospect of further lobbying battles with broadcasters and cable operators.
The bill (H.R. 1554), approved by an overwhelming vote of 422-1, is intended to allow satellite TV providers to offer local channels to their subscribers, cut the copyright fee they pay for programming and extend their satellite copyright licenses for five years.
