Researchers at Osiris Therapeutic, Inc. in Baltimore, Md. have confirmed the existence of human adult stem cells that form the body's structural and connective tissues.
Reporting their findings in the April 2, 1999 issue of the journal Science, the scientists described isolating, expanding, and inducing the differentiation of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) obtained from adult donor bone marrow. MSCs, they wrote, are responsible for the normal replacement and regeneration of bone marrow stroma, bone, cartilage, muscle, tendon, ligament, and fat--a tissue formation process called mesengenesis.
