In a subset of patients in the early stage of chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML), autologous bone marrow transplantation utilizing Philadelphia chromosome-negative stem cells is well-tolerated and can result in prolonged recovery, Italian researchers claim.
Writing in the March 1st issue of Blood, a multicenter team led by Angelo Carella, MD of Ospedale San Martino in Genoa, Italy report on 30 CML patients who received stem cell transplants after high-dose chemotherapy. In 22 cases, all cells were negative for the Philadelphia chromosome, and in all but 2 other cases, no more that 34% of the cells were positive for the chromosome. All patients received ...
