Unsightly facial scars resulting from acne can be the source of painful emotional trauma. Acne inflammation damages collagen in the dermis, leaving cosmetically disfiguring depressed scars (Burres, 1996). Although skin has an amazing and complex process for healing, injured dermis is never completely restored and heals by forming scar tissue. The cosmetic properties of scar tissue can never equal those of uninjured skin (Calvin, 1998).
