If H. L. Mencken were writing today, he might have to change his famous definition of Puritanism to the haunting fear that someone, somewhere, might be allowing their three-year-old child to watch the "Teletubbies."
The nation's current chief puritan, televangelist Jerry Falwell - whose National Liberty Journal shows him to be a formidable opponent of both homosexuality and good English syntax - has dragged the "Teletubbies" from the muck of children's TV into the even more horrifying mire of what passes for political discourse these days. The February issue of NLJ issued a "Parents Alert" which stated that one of the Teletubbies, Tinky Winky, was gay.
