Elektroschmelzwerk Kempten GmbH - known throughout the world as ESK - was founded by Dr. Max Schaidhauf in Kempten, Germany, in 1922. The company marked the beginning of silicon carbide production in Germany, following an increase in the demand for abrasives. In 1933, the company became part of Wacker-Chemie GmbH in Munich, Germany, ranked today among the top 100 industrial companies in Germany.
The company has seen a great deal of expansion and change over the years. 1940 saw the development of a new product, boron carbide, which was used as a substitute for industrial diamond in lapping and finishing, among other applications. During World War II, the company ...
