In early spring, the winter snows succumb to the heat of the rising and sustaining sun. Water swells the stream beds, sending rushing currents downstream. Several tributaries contribute to the stream behind my farmhouse in Montgomery County and in the springtime, its rapid flow can prove hazardous for anyone attempting to ford the stream.
By late summer, this stream may be reduced to a trickle. Only once in more than a dozen years did it cease to flow entirely, leaving only remnants of small puddles.
But spring is the time of new resurgence and rebirth. Beneath this fast-flowing stream are submerged islands of sod. These "clumps of grass" offer nothing ...
