Though Marxists don't have to be academics to quote Karl Marx, it seems that only academic feminists speak of Simone de Beauvoir. That's sad; because The Second Sex provides much of the intellectual foundation for contemporary feminism. We neglect our foremothers, Beauvoir in particular. The 50th anniversary of the publication of The Second Sex is in 1999, so if seems appropriate to remember her now.
